Leadership Styles

Leadership has been defined as the ability to influence others or affect the behaviors of others. There are a number of leadership styles that has been put forward to explain leadership. Leadership styles include autocratic, participative/democratic, and laissez-faire style.

In autocratic leadership, it is the leader who outlines what to be done and how it should be done. This leadership style may be effective incase where time is limited for achieving a certain goal but relevant information is available. In a well motivate organization; this style will be appropriate to solve such a problem. However being consistent in this leadership style, may consequently lead to abuse of the subjects. (William etal 2008)

Democratic leadership style allows for opinions from others, although it is the leader who outlines goals to be achieved. The leader seeks for approval of his ideas by the members of the team. Where relevant information is possessed both by the leader and the team members, this style is the most appropriate. Advantage with this type of leadership is that it encourages employees to work hard since they feel that they are implementing their decisions. However it is appropriate where there is enough time for decision making. (William etal 2008)

Lastly laissez-faire leadership style involves setting up goals but leaves decision making to the team members. Members can make changes as situation calls for. This style work best when dealing with a responsible and mature team members on whom the leaders has tested and approved to be accountable and perfect in handling issues at hand. However any mistake is attributed to the leader not the team member. Factors to consider when deciding on leadership style includes: time at hand and complexity of the task none of this style can be pointed to be the best style.  Employing a mix of all styles is appropriate while considering factors such as complexity of the task, time available, and the information and knowledge with the team one is leading.
